What is the purpose of a title sequence and film opening

The purpose of title sequence

Title sequence helps the audience to know which genre of film there watching. Also title sequence can be beneficial to the audience and the producer. The audience use title sequence to see who are the actors and what's the story line. Whereas, producer use it for to advertise  and marketing. Producers tend to present films using famous actors in it for marketing purpose. In Black swan Natalie Portman's name comes before the directors or producers name. This is to show the importance of well known actor name attracting people before seeing the film.

The title Black Swan its a discrete title which already setting some sort of suspense and creating questions to the audience - so that they can carry on watching. Black swan starts with black and white background and classical music. Then we are introduce to ballerina dancing in the background fading in and out. As soon as black ink started to be splashed onto the fabric - the tone in the music starts to sound a bit angry and brutal. Suddenly, the ballerina's hands first reach outs to the camera (which could mean she asking for help) then quickly disappears. After that, ink then start to be violently splashed onto the fabric and start to see the names of the actor's, director written in a abstract way. I like the part where the whole screen were covered in black ink  then washes itself away-then we see the title again.



The Stepfather. The title sequence starts with a wide shot of the area. As a viewer the setting look calm, angelic with the white house/snow. So I'm already guessing my head its going to be a calm family movie.However, it seemed a bit strange that only one house on the list was highlighted n bright yellow. This starts to build suspense asking myself why?It like we got a low angel shot of the house like will get in a horror/thriller movie. This is were the tense starts to build.All of the sudden the scene jumps where we see manly tools laid out in a straight line - this already telling the viewer that we are about to meet a organized character.The part where he cuts himself makes the audience to reacts as if they felt the pain too despite that the character seems to be calm about it. As a viewer we see changement within the character which kink of appeared bizarre.Then it goes to CS of the family portrait.The man turn on the radio and plays silent night this lets the audience know that its Christmas season.When we hear sound that we wouldn't associate with the events on screen we would call this contrapuntal sound. For example if we were to be watching children playing on the beach we wouldn't usually where the fast pacing music to accompany it as the two styles do not go together.Like in stepfather we hear silent night but people are laying dead which seemed really shocking. 

In a film's opening title sequence , we expect to see movement, objects, characters, setting (location),title, names of actors,directors, everyone that participated. We also expect to hear music, sound and etc.
